Authorities: Husband beaten, stabbed for smoking at home

A Roanoke Rapids woman has been charged with beating and stabbing her husband after becoming enraged that he was smoking inside their home, authorities said Monday.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids woman has been charged with beating and stabbing her husband after becoming enraged that he was smoking inside their home, authorities said Monday.

Sandy Johnson Garner, 28, of Thomas Jefferson Drive, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats. She was being held without bond in the Halifax County jail.

Halifax County Sheriff's Office investigators said Dayshon Garner, 24, was beaten with a broomstick and stabbed with scissors after he smoked a cigarette in the bathroom of his home last week. Sandy Garner had a strict rule about not smoking in the house, investigators said.
