Authorities: Friend of slain Clinton woman was target in shooting

A woman was shot to death in her Clinton apartment this week by mistake, authorities said.

CLINTON, N.C. — A woman was shot to death in her Clinton apartment this week by mistake, authorities said.

Police responded to a report of shots at 219-B East Morrissey Blvd. at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday and found Gerri Newkirk, 30, dead in her bed.

Investigators said that a front bedroom window had been broken out, and they believe a male friend who was staying with Newkirk was the target of the shooting.

The case remains under investigation by Clinton police and the State Bureau of Investigation.
