— A Durham County landfill on East Club Boulevard was evacuated Thursday afternoon as a bomb squad investigated whether a refrigerator dropped off at the site contained explosives, police said.

The locked refrigerator was covered with labels indicating that explosives were inside, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said, but it was unclear whether anything was actually inside.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office bomb squad opened the refrigerator and found no explosives.

Police closed off East Club Boulevard at Camden Avenue and diverted traffic while the bomb squad investigated.

there are tons of people stupid and hateful enough to blow up, yes, a landfill. not my real name

Seems to me that there are lots of people stupid enough to THINK someone might blow up a landfill! Some Americans are seeing terrorists behind every tree, and obviously now, in every fridge.

If people truly think that a person planning to blow up a landfill of all places would decorate the fridge to resemble an Apache helicopter ( subtle wasn't it) and then put stickers on to insinuate that it was dangerous, then we are in a LOT of trouble here. I know people dislike Durham, but I don't think they dislike it enough to blow up the landfills there.

Monca: there are tons of people stupid and hateful enough to blow up, yes, a landfill. Maybe it would have been dramatic enough for you if it was next door to where you live. This has nothing to do with homeland security. You may want to think before you post to prevent yourself from looking a fool.
    Hunter 38: right on!

WHO tries to blow up a landfill? In DURHAM? The Herald-Sun of Durham reported that a discarded fridge decorated to resemble an Apache helicopter brought the sheriff's office bomb squad to a local landfill Thursday. Sounds like an excuse for WRAL to send out the copter to cover this less than dramatic "homeland security" farce.

"When will common sense become common again?"

when right wing extremists stop all the over the top rhetoric demonizing government workers. It is precisely people like you that make these sorts of threats credible.

They did what they're suppose to do. So it's a little inconviences for some.

"yes you can put a lock on a refrigerator. I thought doors had to be removed before you could dispose of refrigerators and or freezers
    sunshine1040"

Actually doors removed, locked or tightly tied shut.

You could see the sticker on it from the live helicopter shots..
A lot of us who go to the dump suspect that one of the workers there overreacted to the sticker and simply wanted to get out of work early..

monca - "When will common sense become common again?"

Gee... MY common sense tells me that your scenario MAKES NO SENSE. How do you know what was printed on the outside of the refrigerator? Why make a bunch of absurd assumptions and then try to claim that common sense should prevail?
