FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County authorities arrested a Fayetteville man on Friday after his girlfriend's bed was set on fire while she was lying in it.

Michael Dwan Hall Jr., 26, of 1900 John Hall Road, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, first-degree arson and misdemeanor child abuse. He was being held in the Cumberland County jail under a $600,000 bond.

Investigators said Hall used a lighter early Wednesday to try to set fire to the bedroom carpet of the home he shares with his girlfriend. When those attempts failed, he used the lighter to set the bed on fire, they said.

The couple’s two children, ages 3 years and 10 months, and two other adults were inside the home at the time, authorities said.

Hall left the house before deputies arrived, and a family member told deputies that Hall said he didn’t care that the children were inside and threatened to kill all of them and burn the house to the ground.
