Authorities charge driver in wreck at Bunn Lake

Posted July 13, 2009

— State troopers on Monday charged a driver and pulled a passenger from Bunn Lake after a one-car wreck near N.C. Highway 39.

Troopers found a four-door 1996 Chrysler sedan submerged in the lake, near Zebulon, early Sunday morning.

Witnesses originally identified the driver as Rafeal Abila, 25. On Monday, Capt. Everett Clendenin of the state Highway Patrol said that identification was incorrect. Clendenin said the driver was Emiliano Luna-Islas, 25, of Zebulon.

Luna-Islas was charged with felony hit and run, misdemeanor death and careless and reckless driving. His passenger, Jesus Celen Rios-Salvador, 30, of Zebulon, was found dead in the lake by authorities. They think he was thrown from the vehicle in the crash.

Troopers said Luna-Islas was traveling at approximately 90 mph when the crash happened.

Interesting......I live in the neightborhood adjacent to Bunn Lake. When I read the original story posted yesterday by WRAL, it did not agree with what was being advised at the crash site.

My dad helped them to find the vehicle. There is a "T" intersection there and he said it looked like he just didn't stop at the stop sign jumped the embankment and went into the lake. He said that he had been out there fishing all morning so it had to have happened the night before. He was probably drunk, and came back to the scene of the crime the next morning to avoid the DUI arrest.
