FOUR OAKS, N.C. — A high speed police chase on Friday night ended on N.C. Highway 54 when authorities crashed the fleeing vehicle.

The chase began when Johnston County deputies tried to stop a white 2017 Jeep Compass near the Four Oaks area driven by 24-year-old Preston Jerome Jones, officials said. The SUV fled, making its way through Smithfield and eventually to Interstate 40 in Wake County.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers took over the chase when it entered Wake County and used a PIT maneuver to end the pursuit when the vehicle got near the North Caroline State Fair.

Jones and a passenger jumped and ran from the crashed SUV, but troopers detained both shortly after. A female passenger was also in the vehicle during the chase, but it is unclear if she was arrested.

Troopers said Jones was charged with felony speeding to elude.
