BENSON, N.C. — A Benson man has been charged with child abuse after Johnston County deputies said he injured his son and then used fishing line to stitch up the wound.

Johnathan Ashley Avery, 31, of N.C. Highway 242, was arrested Friday with felony child abuse. He was being held under a $100,000 bond.

Authorities said Avery hit his 6-year-old son on the head with a spoon, leaving a 3-inch cut. He then stitched up the wound instead of taking the boy to a doctor for treatment, authorities said.

The wound later became infected, and doctors alerted Johnston County authorities to the situation when Avery took the son to have the infection treated.
