Authorities: Benson dad injures son, stitches him up

Posted February 28, 2011

— A Benson man has been charged with child abuse after Johnston County deputies said he injured his son and then used fishing line to stitch up the wound.

Johnathan Ashley Avery, 31, of N.C. Highway 242, was arrested Friday with felony child abuse. He was being held under a $100,000 bond.

Authorities said Avery hit his 6-year-old son on the head with a spoon, leaving a 3-inch cut. He then stitched up the wound instead of taking the boy to a doctor for treatment, authorities said.

The wound later became infected, and doctors alerted Johnston County authorities to the situation when Avery took the son to have the infection treated.

ABC11 also has the Benson father that sent his 14 year old son to the store on his v10 pickup to buy an extension cord... think they're really from Broadslab...

My thoughts also...Caesarsgirl79. Why would he hit his 6 year old son that hard anyway? To put a 3inch cut in his head. There's something wrong with this picture. This kid was too afraid to tell 'anyone' about what had happened to him. Even with the pain from the infection. And his father stitched this childs' head up with what (a pin or needle), and no pain killer while he was doing this.????
If he got his head stitched up with a needle and no pain killer; how does he think that would feel to him. I'm sure the sone felt more pain in just knowing that his father caused all this pain to him.
Where is Child Protection Agency at now?
This boys silence tells me that he possibly has indurer more pain similar to this in the past.

He must have hit that child really hard. He knew what he did was wrong. That's why he didn't take him to the doctor.

I know plenty of parents who've looked after pretty nasty wounds at home. That's not the point. The point is that this man hit his son hard enough to split the boy's head open WITH A SPOON and then sewed him up -- probably to avoid the questions he'd get at a doctor's office. I could hit someone pretty hard with a spoon and not do that kind of damage. Spoons are fairly innocuous. So, either he beat him really hard with the spoon or he hit him with something far more dangerous.

Where was the mother in all of this? Don't she care about the welfare and health of her own son? Are was this father/husband/boy-friend controlling them both?

Not to smart of a dad to cover up his child abuse. I am glad the doctor wised up to this and reported this man. The child should be removed from the home. Social Services what are you waiting on. He could have killed this child.

ncguy...i think your dad might have hit you in the head one time too many

to sidecutter...whats your point so what you survived a bad cut...did your dad stab you with the bottle? if not then your comments don't relate to the story ....read it...his father cut him/injured him and then tried to fix it without medical attention. The issue here is first he injured him and second he neglected to get adequate care for him afterwards.
