The crime is attempted abduction. If the two were to just have sex, they would not be breaking the law. If it were the case of statutory rape, I agree wholeheartedly about a double standard we either need to view people as equals and treat them as such or recognize that there are differences and accept to be fair we must accomodate for those differences. Per Mr. Rustin we could start by repealing the offense of an assault on a female, what is more sexist than that. An assault is an assault unless females need added protections such as the elderly or children it seems archaic to have that on the books.

Wonder how old the 17 year old led her to believe he was and is it illegal in australlia?

They will do what they always seem to do with women and younger men. They will give her a slap on the wrist. If it was a man trying to lure a young girl....well, then he's a pervert and should be thrown under the jail. When a woman does it, it always seems to fall under the "boys will be boys" type theory- just look at the recent stories of older female teachers and their male students. Or look at the case in GA about the 17 and 15 yr olds who had sex. The boy gets thrown in jail as a sex offender for 10 years...and she gets her identity hidden. Double standards are everywhere.

I don't understand what a 31 year old female would want with a 17 year old BOY. To me, this woman is just as much of a pervert as a 31 year old male attempting to lure a 17 year old girl. 17 year olds are not allowed to vote, drink, or enter the army...there is a reason for that, they are not mature enough to make certain decisions. Hope she gets the max.

gregustin: do you have ideas for fixes? I don't: thats why I said it will be interesting to see what happens in court.. thats the only "remedy for the inconsistencies" that we have come up with, it seems.

Why in the world would a 31 yr. old woman want a 17 yr. old boy when there are so many MEN willing and able if that's all she's after. I guess some people are just sick.

Funny, I've only seen I think ONE post on here where the poster thinks the woman was a predator. For some reason, this is all ok because the 17 year old boy is a boy.

I can only imagine the outcry on here if an older man flew from Australia to get together with a 17 year old girl!! I dare say not as many people would be saying, "She's 17, she's an adult!"

this story does border on belonging in the "strange news" column, but as mixed up as the laws are (yes a 17 yo is tried in court as an adult) the law enforcers who care about adults luring underage minors by internet are probably responding to concerned parents because if a 17yo leaves home, he is a "runaway" and the parents are legally responsible for him. No wonder we have a love/hate relationship with the law when it gets this convoluted. But she is "charged" not yet "convicted" so we'll see what comes out in court. Sometimes it would be fun to sit in the courtroom with knitting needles and just watch.
