Attorney general offers guidance on immigration policy

Posted 3:38 p.m. Thursday

— Attorney General Maura Healey is trying to help patients and students better understand the impact of federal immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration.

The Democrat issued guidance to health care centers and public school districts Thursday about their obligations and rights under state and federal law.

Healey, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's immigration policies, said "parents should never be afraid to send their children to school, and people should not be afraid to seek medical treatment for themselves or family members."

Healey said health care providers may treat anyone regardless of their status and emergency departments must provide emergency services without asking about immigration or insurance.

She said public schools are required by law to provide equal access to education to all students regardless of immigration status.
