Man killed in Durham head-on wreck

print friendly

A 35-year-old Durham man died and two people were injured in a head-on collision on Old Oxford Road Saturday night, state troopers said.

Roger McMillian was going north near Riverside Drive around 5:30 p.m. when he moved into the the southbound lane to try to pass another vehicle, troopers said. He saw an oncoming vehicle in the southbound lane, swerved into the northbound lane, overcorrected and ended back up in the southbound lane. He hit the oncoming vehicle  head-on.

McMillian died of his injuries. The driver and passenger in the other car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Duke Hospital. Their names haven't been released.

The wreck happened in no-passing zone, troopers said.

@Dan Cooper, and when you pass, you *never* ever exceed the posted speed limit and you *always* get back in your lane before the the dashed line ends. Sure you do. Glad you're saving 20 seconds for all that risk...good for you.

@KittenClaws, I don't believe that someone, young enough to go to work every day, is driving 40 in a 55 every morning. If you think they are a danger on the road with all of their distractions, you should do all of us a favor and call the police non-emergency number and (maybe anonymously) report this person, so they can get them off the road.

I pass a co-worker on a two lane road almost every morning. Why? The speed limit is 55 and he is driving 40 while eating breakfast and reading a newspaper that is spread across his steering wheel.

"I just don't see the need to pass people on two lanes roads..." allinfantsareatheists

Wow thanks for stating the obvious, isn't that why the article mentioned it was a no passing zone?! As for passing zones on two lane roads, if you don't feel safe doing it then please leave it to experienced drivers who do have the right to pass in certain zones per DOT traffic engineers.

I just don't see the need to pass people on two lanes roads. Unless you can see for a mile and the person is driving 20MPH under the speed limit, it just doesn't make any sense to exceed the speed limit and put everyone else in danger...just so YOU can save a few seconds.

It's no wonder that bicyclists, motorcyclists, school buses, tractors, garbage trucks and every other vehicle that shares the road is put in such grave peril by so many impatient motorists.
