— An assault suspect escaped while being processed in a magistrate's office in Tarboro shortly after midnight Thursday.

Authorities said that Pinetops police brought a man suspected of assaulting his girlfriend to the magistrate's office at 3005 Anaconda Road in Tarboro. Although he was handcuffed, the man broke away and fled on foot. A search was under way.

The suspect's name has not been released.

Pinetops police called the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office for assistance in tracking down the suspect.

Anyone with information about the suspect's whereabouts should call Pinetops police at 252-827-5014.

to usmilewme2.. No you are wrong. Deputies have no contact with the prisoner until there are finished with the booking. Then they are turned over to the jail when they are finished with the magistrate. No need to look into processing. If you maintain control of your prisoner and don't leave him alone, then he won't run out the door. The Pinetops Officer dropped the ball.

Who or what are we looking for wral?

  • usmilewme2 Jul 23, 2010

hmmmm, magistrates office is right beside jail entrance..where you must go through locked doors to get to after 5:00pm..office is closed...hmmm lets relook into processing...

usmilewme2: This was an escape form Pinetops Police. The magistrates office where you bring suspects to charge them is at the Sheriff's Office facility. There is no security at the magistrate's office as it is open to the public. It is the responsibility of the individual officer to maintain their prisoner until booked into the jail after being charged. So, starshield would be correct. It has nothing to do with the Sheriff's Office, although I can guarantee you that the Sheriff's Office are the ones looking for the escapee.

It's apparent they have had a lot of inmates escaping in this county. That is something that needs to be looked investigated.

This was the Pinetops Police. This really has nothing to do with the jail or the Sheriff's Office.

starshield, yes this was Pinetops police but at Edgcombe County Dention Center, which means deputies on duty would be handling the suspect...:)

Well, whoever they are...Pinetops Police or Sheriff's Office, this individual should have been handcuffed properly. And even if he turns out to be this Houdini that can get out of restraints easily, how are we (the public) supposed to protect ourselves and our families, if we don't know who we are supposed to looking out for? They didn't provide any information, yet they want help from the public. Give me a break.
