SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Emergency officials helped a man escape high waters Wednesday afternoon after he drove his car around barricades blocking a section of Hospital Road in Smithfield.

The man's car quickly washed into a water-filled ditch after he drove past the barriers at about 1:30 p.m.

The Smithfield Fire Department responded, and a rescuer waded out to the car, gave the man a life jacket and helped him to safety.

Officials said the man was trying to drive through high waters to visit a family member at the SECU Hospice House on Hospital Road.

Hospital Road and Buffalo Road remain blocked as water from the Neuse River remains high.
