Art Museum Receives 43-Foot Sculpture

The sculpture, a hand-wrought, stainless steel tree entitled "Askew" was designed specifically for the museum by New York artist Roxy Paine.

“We are grateful for this gift in honor of Julia Daniels,” museum director Larry Wheeler said in a statement. “Her years of service to the museum are deeply appreciated, and this magnificent Roxy Paine sculpture will stand as a testament to her commitment to and her passion for the museum.”

The four-story sculpture will be installed in the south garden, adjacent to the museum's main entrance when the facility's new building is completed in late 2009, officials said. The sculpture, which reflects the natural environment in metallic light show of blues, greens, silvers, and whites and changes depending on the angle and intensity of daylight, will be visible from numerous vantage points inside and outside the museum.

“The North Carolina Museum of Art is such an important part of the life of our community and our state," said Daniels, who led the Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2003. "I am honored with the addition of this spectacular sculptural tree to the museum’s landscape.”
