Art museum lines up programs for tweens, young teens

The workshops, for kids ages 11 to 14, are 1 p.m., June 14, and 1 p.m., Aug. 9. 

The gallery and studio classes begin with a trip to the galleries or Museum Park for inspiration, followed by a studio experience where participants explore new materials and processes. Each workshop introduces a new theme and allows focused time to be creative with friends. The cost is $7 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

The theme on Saturday is "Iconic Me." An icon is an artistic portrait of an important person that uses symbols to tell us about his or her life, says the description. Create a modern iconic portrait of yourself or someone important to you using mixed media. Selected works from this workshop will be displayed in an upcoming NCMA exhibition.

Altered Books is the theme on Aug. 9. Transform a used book into a unique work of art using a variety of painting, carving, and assemblage techniques.
