Art museum family movie series launches this week

The hour-long program, which runs at 1 p.m., Wednesdays, through Aug. 21, features short live action and animated films that you won't see at your average movie theater.

The N.C. Museum of Art launches its summer family movies series on Wednesday.

The hour-long program, which runs at 1 p.m., Wednesdays, through Aug. 21, features short live action and animated films that you won't see at your average movie theater. In other words, don't expect to see any Hollywood blockbusters here.

This week, for instance, the short animated films "The Dot," "Ish" and "Sky Color," all based on the work of writer and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. "The Dot," for instance, is just five minutes long. It also includes a screening of "Art Dog," based on the work of author and illustrator Thacher Hurd.

Next week, on June 26, the program runs from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. and features a screening of "The Secret of Kells," a 2009 animated movie based on the "Book of Kells."

In other words, families will get an opportunity to see all kinds of ways that stories can be told through film. As part of the series, the art museum in west Raleigh also will have some free crafts for kids at noon before each of the movies.

Admission to the movie is free, but you will need to get a ticket from the box office. The movies are best for kids ages 5 and up. Kids under 12 must be with an adult.
