DURHAM, N.C. — State troopers have apprehended a man suspected of stealing a trailer filled with low-grade explosives.

Derrick Downey was arrested after a brief chase by state troopers in Wake County Tuesday. He has been charged with felony possession of stolen property and is being held in the Wake County jail, authorities said.

Earlier Tuesday, Durham police found a trailer that may have been filled with low-grade explosives. It was empty when police found it at the Town and Country Convenience Store near the intersection of Fayetteville Road and Cook Street, investigators said.

Authorities said Downey stole the trailer from a hotel parking lot on Miami Boulevard. The trailer contained copper wiring, as well as material used for electrical welding.

The low-grade explosives remain missing, investigators said.
