Arrest made in fatal Rocky Mount shooting

Posted February 6, 2012

— Rocky Mount police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting early Sunday.

Sean Christopher White, 36, of Tarboro, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder. He was being held in the Edgecombe County jail without bond.

Police responding to the American Legion Marshall Pittman Post No. 173, at 401 Madison St., around 2:15 a.m. Sunday found Christopher Lorenzo Curtis, 40, outside the business. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

George Curtis said Monday that his brother was out with friends and was trying to stop a fight inside the American Legion post when he was shot.

Chris Curtis was an Army veteran, but American Legion members said he had no connection to their organization.

His family said he was a devoted father of three children, ages 16, 11 and 10.

Investigators are trying to find other possible witnesses to the crime. Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to call the Rocky Mount Police Department at 252-972-1411 or Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.

Prayers for the family. The RMPD and other LEOs did a good job with the quick arrest.

Innocent until proven guilty needs to go out the window. There are no adequate crime deterrents in place. The system needs to be turned upside down and shaken up to put the fear of God into these people who think going to jail is worth the risk.

This guy will probably get 20 to life and be eligible for parole after 10. But it's only to control prison overcrouding. Of course the man he killed only got life. What a waste of a human being.

Very sad to see this thing happen. By all accounts a very good man gunned down for trying to help stop violence. I hope Mr. White is punished to the fullest extent and somehow others can learn from this.

It doesn't matter where you live, you can get shot anywhere nowadays. R.I.P. to Mr. Curtis for trying to do the right thing.
