Video cameras are inexpensive and easy to install, so property owners, businesses and municipalities are adding them practically everywhere.

With the help of your smart phone, you detect where those cameras are and know when you're being watched..

Hidden Camera Detector says it locates "potential targets," including pinhole and other small lens cameras. It uses your phone's camera and flash to scan a specific area and even allows you to save images with GPS information. The app is $4.99 in in the Apple app store.

Dont-spy uses your phone's built-in compass system. It picks up the electromagnetic field put out by devices such as microphones, cameras and other so called "bugs." It costs $1.99 for iOS.

For Android users, the Detectify app also uses the phone compass. Scan an area to detect even infrared spy cameras that allow a user to see what's going on even in total darkness. That app is free.

Keep in mind, no app can prevent cameras from spying on you. They just let you know when someone might be watching.
