RALEIGH, N.C. — A judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals is heading to Iraq to help improve the country's justice system.

Judge Eric Levinson will work for the U.S. Justice Department and will consult with Iraq's senior judges and U.S. officials. He said he also will train police officers, investigators, prosecutors and judges.

Meanwhile, more members of the N.C. National Guard will soon be fighting in Iraq. The 1132nd Military Police Unit, based in Rocky Mount and Tarboro, will have an official farewell ceremony next month before a year-long deployment.

More than half of the unit's members have already served in Iraq.
