— Apex police are investigating two thefts where Freon was taken from home air-conditioning units and used for huffing.

Police said the thefts happened Sunday at 2010 and 2005 Jerimouth Drive. In both cases, witnesses said, someone released Freon into bags before leaving.

Police said the suspected thieves were inhaling the Freon to get high, which is known as huffing. One person was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The names of the suspected thieves were not released.

Charges have not been filed.

"Now, if we can get the present generation of kids to see and understand that, we will have made just one step forward. Because they have a long hard road to travel to recovery."-hattieb2001

It has nothing to do with generation, IMO. The brashness of youth is not dependent on when you were born. Recent studies have shown that brain development in the area responsibility for judgment and understanding consequences is not complete until you are 22 years old.

This isn't an excuse for their actions, but every generation of teens has done things that made their parents scream "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!?"

Yes, 'Not_So_Dumb'.....we all have done things in life that we may regret or are not proud of. But at least 'some of us' had the God given sense to not try it for a second time.
Especially, if it were life threatening.

Now, if we can get the present generation of kids to see and understand that, we will have made just one step forward.
Because they have a long hard road to travel to recovery.

    I agree, 'whatelseisnew'.....you just can't cure stupid.
Somebody tell these people they are doing permanent damage to their brains. They will need some of those damaged brain cells to do simple things like 'going to the bathroom by themselves', or just picking up a simple glass of water to quirst their thirst.
They not even going to be able to do that, if they continue on this road of self-destruction.

I know this kid who has been huffing since he was 10 years old. He is now 23; hasn't got a half of an ounce sense or brains in his head. All from huffing. He can't hold a job, can't drive a car, can't even carry on a civilized conversation without grinning and saying nothing.

And this is what some young people want to call a good time?!!?

    I wonder?

Yeah, because none of you guys did anything you regret when you were younger.

Kids need to find something constructive to do for sure. Let them make themselves sick and they may stop. What dummies. Let's try inhaling direct exhaust from a tailpipe!

I would not provide medical care. We need to remove intentionally stupid from the gene pool.

OOPS that was supposed to read "Additionally, the change of state from liquid to vapor is *NOT* insentanious upon "hitting the atmosphere".

  • meBNme Mar 21, 2011

    "filling bags? with freon?

Not likley- freon cannot be put in a bag- as soon as it hits the atmosphere it turns into a gas.
    ncguy"

Refrigerant ("freon" is a brand) can be put into a bag, it just can't be kept there for long.

Additionally, the change of state from liquid to vapor is insentanious upon "hitting the atmosphere".

It does evaporate quickly, especially when presurised, but at atmospheric pressure, a gallon of liquid refrigerant will not emediately change state to vapor.
It will be well below freezing however.
If you were to stick your hand in it, you would emediately have frost bite.
You could not drink or enhale liquid refrigrant and survive.

It is the vapor they are enhaling.
The "high" they get from it is more likely simple oxegen deprivation more than chemical induced.
CFCs in "freon" destroy oxegen molecules.

play stupid games...... win stupid prizes

on the web... Authorities say the way the kids are using the gas to get high is by placing a plastic bag over their head. Then they fill the bag with freon gas. It's heavier than oxygen so it forces the oxygen out of the bag, leaving only the dangerous gas...
