APEX, N.C. — Mayor Keith H. Weatherly announced Tuesday that he was resigning as Apex's chief executive, effective Friday.

Weatherly made the announcement during a Town Council meeting. On Wednesday, he was named deputy secretary for legislative affairs and policy for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

“We are proud to have Keith join our team,” Transportation Secretary Tony Tata said in a statement. “His extensive experience working with the General Assembly, local governments and transportation planning organizations will help NCDOT continue to find better solutions that improve the lives of all North Carolinians and visitors to our state.”

Weatherly has been a political leader in Apex for 20 years – two as a council member and 18 as mayor.

“This was a very hard decision for me but it was an offer I could not pass up,” he said.

The Town Council plans to appoint a new mayor as soon as possible. Mayor Pro Tem Gene Schulze will assume the position in the interim.
