Mayor Keith H. Weatherly announced on Jan. 21, 2014 that he will resign from leading the Wake County town to take a new job. Weatherly has been Apex mayor for 18 years.

— Mayor Keith H. Weatherly announced Tuesday that he was resigning as Apex's chief executive, effective Friday.

Weatherly made the announcement during a Town Council meeting. On Wednesday, he was named deputy secretary for legislative affairs and policy for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

“We are proud to have Keith join our team,” Transportation Secretary Tony Tata said in a statement. “His extensive experience working with the General Assembly, local governments and transportation planning organizations will help NCDOT continue to find better solutions that improve the lives of all North Carolinians and visitors to our state.”

Weatherly has been a political leader in Apex for 20 years – two as a council member and 18 as mayor.

“This was a very hard decision for me but it was an offer I could not pass up,” he said.

The Town Council plans to appoint a new mayor as soon as possible. Mayor Pro Tem Gene Schulze will assume the position in the interim.

Let's see if he gets a raise like Ricky Diaz did.

Congrats to Mayor Weatherly. He has been an excellent leader in Apex. I was especially impressed with the way he handled the chemical explosion in Apex. DOT is lucky to have him.

I do not know anything about the Mayor and from comments he seems to be liked.

Just curious if the recent completion of the toll road that goes through Apex has anything to do with this appointment? Not alleging anything at all just asking....

Mayor Weatherly has built a distinguished record of public service in D.C., as an agricultural official in N.C., and as mayor of Apex. He has set an excellent example for those who aspire to public service. There is little doubt that he will lend credibility to his next venture. Good luck, Mr. Mayor.
