— Police said the Monday deaths of a man and a woman at a home on Old Grove Lane in Apex appear to be a murder-suicide.

Apex police and a Wake County deputy were asked to check on the welfare of residents at 36 Old Grove Lane at about 9:25 a.m., and they found the bodies of Hallie Kenneth Price Jr. and Jean Byrd Price, both 70, dead of gunshot wounds, police said.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office received information from an attorney who knew the victims and requested the welfare check based on an email the attorney had received from the couple, police said.

According to neighbors, the couple was renting the home from a developer who owns about six properties in the area.

Frank Woods, who lives nearby, said he often played the lottery with the Prices.

"I get Powerball tickets, and they used to get in and buy $3 Powerball tickets twice a week with me," he said.

Another neighbor said the couple was facing financial troubles.

Documents obtained by WRAL News show that, in 2008, the couple filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for a funeral home they owned at the time. They sold it in 2014.

Woods said the couple was always happy, and he had no idea there were any issues

"I'm friends with all of these people out here," he said. "That's a shock."

The case remains under investigation.

Setting aside the murder-suicide, which is tragic, of course, but why does someone who has money issues buy lottery tickets? Or does that particular mindset LEAD to money troubles?

My first thought was that it could be more of an assisted suicide and suicide. At least that's my hope. Maybe one was suffering a terminal illness and didn't want to suffer anymore and the other one didn't want to be alone.

Sad. Makes you wonder; having survived 70 years what event transpired to put them (he/she/both) in the mindset that led to this. Prayers for any family/friends.
