CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Authorities ruled an early Sunday morning fire at a Chapel Hill apartment complex as arson.

Initially, Chapel Hill fire officials said they believed the origin of the fire at Kingswood Apartments was suspicious. A joint investigation with the State Bureau of Investigation determined the blaze was intentionally set.

Preliminary investigations showed the fire started in an apartment on the third floor. SBI agents are continuing the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

Twelve families were displaced by the fire, and one firefighter was injured battling the blaze.

The fire caused at least $300,000 worth of damage to the building, according to initial estimates. Two apartments and the roof were destroyed, and ten other apartments had smoke and water damage.
