Three charities that work to help animals took home top prizes in the 2016 Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge.

The first place prize of $5,000 went to the Coalition to Unchain Dogs while second place when to Saving Grace Animals for Adoption, who walked away with $2,500. The third place, $1,000 prize was awarded to Hope Animal Rescue.

The challenge featured nearly 50 trees decorated by area nonprofits and displayed at the American Tobacco Campus. Voting concluded Friday night.

Bee Downtown, WinGS Inc. and Habitat for Humanity of Durham were each winners in the Celebrity Choice category and will receive $1,000.

Community Awards and Sponsored Awards:

  • The Durham Rescue Mission, winner of the American Tobacco Tenant Choice Award, will receive $500
  • Carolina Donor Services, winner of the FOX 50 Community First Award, will receive a public service announcement valued at $1,500.
  • The Durham Ballet Theatre, winner of the DPAC Community Star Award, will receive a prize package including an assortment of tickets for the 2016-2017 DPAC performance season.
  • Alex’ Lemonade Stand, winner of the Wool E. Bull Prime Cut Award, will be offered the use of the American Tobacco Suite for on baseball game during the Durham Bull’s 2017 season.
