Angier man dies in crash as wife calls 911

Posted March 21, 2011

— A 42-year-old Angier man died in a crash early Monday as his wife called 911 and tried to pull him from his van, according to troopers.

Ismael Rangel Martinez, of 17 Windmere Drive, was driving west on Elevation Road near Benson when he lost control in a curve, drove into a ditch and struck a tree at about 12:45 a.m., troopers said.

His wife, whose name was not released, was following in another vehicle about a quarter mile behind him and came upon the crash.

Martinez's wife tried to help him get out of the vehicle, but was unable, troopers said. Martinez died by the time authorities arrived.

Troopers said they don't think alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. Martinez was speeding, but not excessively, authorities said. No other information was released.

I did personally know this family. I went to school with his oldest daughter, and my husband grew up with him and worked with him for many years. He was a nice, hardworking man, with a wonderful family. It is terrible that such a devoted family man is gone. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless.

Can't imagine how horrible that must have been for his wife. A ditch can be very dangerous to hit even at a low speed its like hitting a wall. Must have been a terrible scene for everyone.

    Prayers with family.

Healthy Skeptic -- Thank you for clarifying why all the information may not be immediately available. Some people expect to know everything instantly and see a conspiracy to keep quiet when they don't. We should keep the deceased man's wife and family in our thoughts/prayers. That is what matters.

That must have been a horrible thing for her to drive up on,I can't imagine.I drive and travel alot in the late hours, noone know what happened but I always try to be careful due to deer and other animals in the country.

How sad. They said he was speeding- this is a hugh problem arounbd here. Why is everyone is such a hurry. This is what happens. Anythg n happen- but please slow down. Every night I get people in my trunk because they want to get some where faster- I would rather get there a bit late than not at all. Be safe adn slow down.

Given the time of night, I wonder if it was an animal that ran out across the road and startled him. Happens so fast.

Sad for the family, and how horrible to drive up on your own husbands accident. Prayers for them.

    How incredibly sad.

Just a quick note for all of those who ask for more info. I work for a newspaper and have been to a number of wrecks or fires, etc. 99% of the time, police, SHP, rescue, fire fighters will not release any information at the scene. We have to talk to witnesses or those involved to get the info. Which is hard to do if a wife is grieving for her husband who just died in front of her eyes. Plus, who wants to be a vulture?

For high profile events, a spokesperson will release preliminary information, but it is usually not very much. For folks that end up at a hospital, there are HIPPA laws to contend with. So, we have to wait for the incident report to be released which does not happen sometimes for 24 or 48 hours (or more).

What I'm saying, is, that many of the laws passed to protect people's information also makes it less accessible to the press. That is why you often see less information than you'd like.
