RALEIGH, N.C. — About 8,000 local angels will have a brighter Christmas because of the generosity of the Triangle community. That's how many children are served by the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program.

Lizzy Adams, director of public relations for the Salvation Army, said the process spreads joy from donors to volunteers, to needy families.

Angel Tree children get clothes and cold weather necessities.

"The Angel Tree focuses specifically on clothing, and sometimes just having new clothes gives you a boost in self-confidence, so that’s what we are hoping to provide," Adams said.

Then the Salvation Army goes an extra step to allow parents to choose from among donated toys.

"They come in not knowing what to expect and they are overjoyed," Adams said. "You have hundreds of volunteers that are walking the parents through. They are able to pick out the toys for their children themselves. That’s really awesome."
For those still looking for an angel to sponsor, the Salvation Army has a list of children and their needs online.
