Elon, N.C. — An Amtrak train bound for Raleigh struck and killed a person on the tracks near Elon this afternoon, officials said. None of the 69 passengers on board the No. 74 Piedmont were injured, although their trip was delayed by almost two hours, according to Amtrak officials.
The accident happened just after 2 p.m., and the tracks were cleared at about 3:40 p.m.
The conductor of the train asked for a colleague to finish the run, and Amtrak granted that request.
