Amtrak train strikes, kills person in Elon

Posted June 5

— An Amtrak train bound for Raleigh struck and killed a person on the tracks near Elon this afternoon, officials said. None of the 69 passengers on board the No. 74 Piedmont were injured, although their trip was delayed by almost two hours, according to Amtrak officials.

The accident happened just after 2 p.m., and the tracks were cleared at about 3:40 p.m.

The conductor of the train asked for a colleague to finish the run, and Amtrak granted that request.

We don't have enough information in this article to know if slowing the trains down would have prevented it, so slowing them all down seems premature at this point.

Yet again? They really need to slow these trains down in urban areas. At least they're getting quicker at cleaning up the mess so everyone is less inconvenienced.
