The American Dance Festival, which brings some amazing modern dance to Durham each summer, always has a children's series with kid-friendly performances and parties.

The one-hour shows start at 1 p.m. at the Durham Performing Arts Center and are followed by a free party in the lobby with live music, face painting, snacks and other activities. Tickets are $16. If you buy tickets to all three performances, the total is just $32.25.

Here's the schedule:

Pilobolus, July 1
Paul Taylor Dance Company, July 8
Mark Morris Dance Group, July 22

Also, kids ages 6 to 17 can attend one of the evening festival performances for free with the purchase of a single ticket or subscription. The Kids Night Out program is a great way to expose kids to more dance. These sound like great parent-child outings!

There are a limited number of these free tickets. And, a warning, some programs can contain adult themes and nudity. So, as you select a program to take your child to, check with the festival to make sure it's the right fit.

The festival's website has more information.
