America Votes takes responsibility for controversial memo

Published: 2013-02-27 20:58:00
Updated: 2013-02-28 06:46:59

America Votes has taken responsibility for a controversial strategy memo that led to calls from Republicans to investigate another liberal-leaning nonprofit.

Last week, sources leaked a document to the Charlotte Observer and WRAL that included an e-mail from Blueprint NC, a group that helps coordinate nonprofits. The document included polling information and a strategy memo. The memo called for pressuring Gov. Pat McCrory and Republican legislative leaders by attacking their ethics and weakening their ability to govern.

Although officials with Blueprint NC initially indicated the packet came from them, they later said they misunderstood reporters and said they were only responsible for the polling information.

Republican leaders took umbrage at the memo and called for investigations of Blueprint for violating their tax-exempt status and campaigning without disclosing their activities.

Late today, Jessica Laurenz, state director for America Votes, said she drafted the memo.

“I wrote the draft memo in my capacity as the coordinator of progressive 501c4 organizations," Laurenz said via email. "No legal violations have occurred, and Republican strategists are correct when they say there is nothing surprising in the document. Many people strongly disagree with Governor McCrory's vision for the state of North Carolina and will aggressively fight it. That is hardly breaking news.”

Laurenz's statement is unlikely to change Republican minds about the memo. Republican operatives are reveling in the negative attention focused on a liberal-leaning nonprofit network, saying that conservative groups linked to the JW Pope Foundation have been unfairly targeted for years.

"Blueprint NC continues to be the victim of a disinformation campaign by political operatives seeking to silence our free-speech rights around important issues facing North Carolina," Blueprint Executive Director Sean Kosofsky said this weekend.

Earlier this week, Americans for Prosperity, a conservative nonprofit, called for all groups associated with Blueprint NC to be cut off from state funding.

"It's not who authored it," said Dallas Woodhouse, state director for AFP. "What Blueprint is trying to do is have plausible deniability." Even if Blueprint didn't author the memo, he said, it still created the forum for it to be distributed. And groups that are among Blueprint's partners, he said, receive taxpayer money.

"Money is fungible," he said. "The bottom line on our point is they should not be able to use taxpayer money to engage in these kind of partisan attacks."

"The political polarization in the US is going to be the death of our country. It will eventually rip us in two. Please stop contributing to it."

there have always been heated debates in this country. The problem is only the average citizens are polarized. The two parties aren't actually all that different. They need each other. They are both all about taxing and spending. It's a distraction and a charade and it works very well.

"Sounds exactly like what this memo is trying to do, create stuff in order to pass blame to another party. How hard would that be, create something like that then go to a rally, put it on the car and snap pictures.

Yes, exactly what I would expect from a party of hatred like democrats." Damien Thorne

It's on the first page of their playbook. In fact the person that first brought it up here just happens to be solidly anti-republican, anti-tea party and he originally stated that he was at this tea party rally....yeah, right

Why not enact a law that take the money given to these programs of hate and spend in on things that all the taxpayers can benefit from like paying our bills or creating jobs! Free speech is not always the law cause if it was people would not be getting fired from their jobs over telling the boss what you feel. You have the right to free speech only if you are part of certain groups only. How can it be "free speech" when the taxpayers are footing the money to them?

Sounds a lot like npr if you ask me...

"So when I went to a TEA party rally and saw a bumper sticker that said "DO NOT RE-NIG IN 2012" thats not racist? The "reward" you are referring to was for one specific event. Not racism in general. I could record my aunt one night and claim that reward in a minute." vinylcarwraps23

investigate anything that tax dollars get put on,,, Time to suck it up and go back to the things needed the most,,, survival mode,,, but it will probably go down the commode.

The most offensive part of this whole circus is that ANY groups like these (lib or con) receive taxpayer funding! I truly appreciate freedom of speech in America, but since when does public money need to be used to 'support' it? I don't expect NC to pay for me to say what I already have the right to say. I certainly don't expect to give public money to groups that want to amplify what they say by using taxpayer money.

"This whole incident shows how much out of tune with this country all politicans are. It's a memo. A MEMO. Nothing..." important

It is an example of how all liberals operate.

" Evidently you do not know many liberals...(yadda yadda, blah blah)...someone who cares about the welfare of the people--their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties,,,(more nonsense) if that is what they mean by “a liberal”, then I’m proud to say I’m a liberal." ccsmith1902

Rhetoric and talking points aside, liberals are the party of hate and will use any means necessary to gain power. If that's what you support then yes, you have a lot to be proud of. Perhaps instead of looking ahead ALL of the time, you should look back once in a while at the long line of failures, poverty and misery in your wake.

NC-Interest - you obviously did not read the intent of the memo. It was meant to gather all special interest groups and have them coordinate attacks and invent smear campaigns. They know this is a successful tactic because the GOP is overly sensitive to perceptions that have nothing to do with reality.

Let's face it, if people repeat a lie often enough, other people will believe it. We're a shallow society, short on common sense and big on whining.

I personally condemn these sort of actions. I may not agree with much the current administration has done but will support them for the good of the state. If I express my displeasure, it will be in the voting booth. I understand how democracy works.

"Googling ain't hard.

What's the point? It's completely irrelevant to the story.

"No legal violations have occurred"

lies, lies, lies. cya, cya, cya.

Their propoganda site passes for an authoratative source in your tin foil hat world? aetius476

If you can't attack the facts, then attack the source!

This whole incident shows how much out of tune with this country all politicans are. It's a memo. A MEMO. Nothing important. However the chicken little brigades are out in force. No wonder this country is in such sad shape. Would be a good thing for all politicans to be fired and replaced with decent people.

The GOP can do no worse than the Democrats. And let's not forget, a lot of North Carolina's problems really only started under Easley and Perdue during a period when North Carolina was ranked at the top of the best places to live and work in America. Liberals, fleeing the high tax states of California and New York flooded our area and brought their demands for the same failed economic policies that put their home states into bankruptcy. Let's not forget, until 2008, North Carolina was a red state when it came to the national elections. It's the northern aggressors and the left coast whiners who have cost North Carolinians jobs and brought higher taxes.

Tax exempt organizations are not allowed to participate in political lobbying or any other activity to influence legislation. If they do, they become a different type of organization.

I sure as heck don't want to pay (with my tax dollars) for anyone form either party to go on a smear campaign of the other party. They can raise their own money for that.

45 strikes: Evidently you do not know many liberals. You are told what they think rather than knowing what they think.A Liberal …someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people--their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties--someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by “a liberal”, then I’m proud to say I’m a liberal.

They shopuld ban all PACs. Wags

American Progress Action: a leftist, "neocon" conspiracy obsession group.

Their propoganda site passes for an authoratative source in your tin foil hat world?

If the republicans did something like this, you would never hear the end of it and also, I'm sure the libs would find someway to call it racist.

"I don't see any lawmakers jumping on that anytime soon. They love money in politics. They buy votes." - cvdurham

i.e. food stamps, welfare, sec 8 housing, "extended UE benefits, bogus "green job giveaways, etc.

Yes, it works quite well. The current occupier of the WH was able to buy 2 terms...

"So when I went to a TEA party rally and saw a bumper sticker that said "DO NOT RE-NIG IN 2012" thats not racist? "

How did you know the political ideology of the car's owner?

The Republicans are in charge in NC now. Sorry liberials, get use to it. Sore losers.

The politics of personal destruction, lying is ok, the ends justify the means, class warfare. These are the staples of the Democratic platform for the past 20 years or so. Now that their party is in power and failing miserably, the new mantra is "oh, it's the political polarization that is ripping this country in two..." They honestly want conservatives to become morally and ethically bankrupt like liberals so we can all get along. That is their idea of compromise. Now that Americans are getting to see the true colors of the liberals, things will change. Hence, the panic. 4Strikes

Thank God I don't live in your world. Sounds terrible!

Funny someone here whining about Soros. Guess who is behind Americans For Prosperity (AFP)? The Koch Brothers. http://www.kochbrothersexposed.com/

Get a clue.

Let me help you. What he SHOULD have said is, "Priority #1 will be FIXING THE ECONOMY." Why is that lost on you?

Called a figure of speech. Of course the great one has said that every year for 5 years yet proceeds to push socialized medicine and other social causes of his supporters.

its called politics, get a thicker skin GOP, you guys do it all the time.

POLITICAL TERRORISTS

"Before we go after groups like BluePrint NC, we should be looking at all the churches that need their own tax exempt statuses examined." - stagemanageralan

What about the NAACP whic is a tax expempt 501c3. As biased and rabidly politically active as they come. Yet, the ban on a 501c3 engaging in partisan political activity is apparently overlooked.

"Let me help you. What he SHOULD have said is, "Priority #1 will be FIXING THE ECONOMY." Why is that lost on you?" - matt_wood

Because Matt, you can't very well do one without the other. Mitch had the priority right.

With a leftist, deficit loving, spendaholic in the White House, a return to solid fiscal footing is likely impossible. The nation is finding this out to all of our cost...

They shopuld ban all PACs.

""The political polarization in the US is going to be the death of our country. It will eventually rip us in two. Please stop contributing to it."

And THAT folks is the truest statement I've read on here in quite some time....And it is happening from the so called 'top' down. Maybe we can stop it from the bottom up????" Scubagirl

ACORN, Blueprint, America Votes, NAACP........... all the same fabric. Just stir the pot and lead by disruption to self justify their existence.

sounds like a c4 is taking the hit for the c3, since the c3 has more to lose interms of funding and tax status. Here's a question of greater importance: Should someone who owes $$$,$$$,$$$ in back taxes be allowed to hold political office, Honorable Mayor of Pittsboro? That could be a huge conflict of interest.

"This is the headline story of the day? Really?" hp277

It's the leftist propaganda machine, trying to prop up their leftist cohorts. They need all the help they can get.

"Right wing nutjobs. "Investigate". Investigate what? Someone writing a memo describing exactly how the republicons need a good dose of their own medicine? Yeah right. Let's wast even MORE taxpayer money doing anything but helping the citizens of this state. We don't need no stinkin jobs! we need to be told how to live our lives some more and a bunch of gubmint laws makin us do it their way! I guess the right wing is trying to create more jobs. Police, spies, watchdogs, informants, jailers, and so on." RadioDJ

You should be happy. They are suggesting that your beloved tax dollars are being deminished by having political activist groups claim tax exempt status. By the way, based on the other things you are ranting about, jobs, too many laws, spies, government intrusion, you sound more like a Republican. Maybe you should relook at your party.

Is it any wonder we are in the financial position we are in... With the attitude of "My idea is better than yours" is like, forgive me for this, little girls in school...

Yawn. You do realize that the GOP's own Art Pope, Karl Rove, and the Koch brothers have tax exempt organization too? If you don’t like the tax exempt part, have your Rep rewrite the law.

I don't see any lawmakers jumping on that anytime soon. They love money in politics. They buy votes.

They are helping citizens express their right to free speech. They did nothing wrong. Before we go after groups like BluePrint NC, we should be looking at all the churches that need their own tax exempt statuses examined.

I'm sure monies received by this organization from taxpayers is not supposed to be used in this manner. Problem is, without oversight and being accountable to someone/something, these "organizations" will find a way to use these funds any way they see fit and try to justify their use. Truth is money/power corrupts at all levels and those "levels" feel they can do and get away with anything as long as they have the money to back them up.

Funny how they change their tune...... from being responsible for the memo, to one of misunderstanding.....yeah, right. If anyone believes that then I have a bridge to sell you!

This is news? Both parties and their affiliates do this and lie like rugs regarding doing so. These people just got caught doing it.

"The bottom line on our point is they should not be able to use taxpayer money to engage in these kind of partisan attacks."

I agree No one should get funding if they are a political hack organization. admyank

This organization receives no federal funding. They are tax exempt. It's not the same thing.

"Priority #1 will be to make him a one termer." - Mitch McConnell

Not what i would call a vicious presonal attack.I guess he should have said i hope to help him get reelected. - pdbullard

Let me help you. What he SHOULD have said is, "Priority #1 will be FIXING THE ECONOMY." Why is that lost on you?

You truly cannot have it both ways Scubagirl

you can if you're a liberal

Ethics and morality are non-existent when it comes to liberals.

"The bottom line on our point is they should not be able to use taxpayer money to engage in these kind of partisan attacks."

I agree No one should get funding if they are a political hack organization.

I would even say that Obama's group should be cut off too.

This is the headline story of the day? Really?

A "disinformation campaign"?? Ha - we have the memo. What "disinformation" exactly are the republicans pushing? No one can lie like a lefty.
