Amber Alert canceled for missing Burlington children; man arrested

Posted December 8, 2012

— Rowan County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Burlington man Saturday hours after he assaulted his girlfriend in the parking lot of a Burlington Walmart and took her three children.

According to Burlington police, Detarrio Antwann Yarbor, of Cleveland Avenue, assaulted Courtnni Johnson, 24, about 12 a.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart on Garden Road. Before police arrived, Yarbor left the scene with three children, a 5-year-old, 4-year-old and 4-month-old.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued an Amber Alert for the children shortly after.

About 5 a.m., authorities in Rowan County stopped Yarbor on Interstate 85. He informed deputies that he had dropped the children off at a home on Queen Ann Street in Burlington.

The children were found safe at a family member's house and were in good health, and authorities canceled the Amber Alert.

Yarbor faces three counts of child abduction, one count of assault on a female and one count of assault on a child under 12. He was in the Rowan County jail Saturday morning under a $50,000 secured bond.

Burlington police are still investigating the incident and said more charges are possible. Anyone with information about the case should call the Burlington Police Department at 336-229-3500 or Alamance County Crime Stoppers at 336-229-7100.
