Tough love is easier said than done, especially when you're busy working parents. Sometimes, it's easier to give in than take something away and have to deal with the consequences.
This week, my husband and daughter got into a disagreement. As a result, he took her car away for about 24 hours. The fallout was that I was at the gym and received an hysterical call from her telling me she needed a ride to school. I, unfortunately, had just gotten out of the pool. So, I threw on my sweatshirt and sweatpants over my wet suit and rushed home to take her to school.
I then started ticking through all the scheduling scenarios in my mind of how I was going to manage this. I don't have the kind of job where I can leave work in the afternoon and pick them up at school. I rely on my older daughter to drive her younger sister to and from school and sometimes to after school activities.
Thankfully, my husband was able to pick up both girls at school that afternoon and assured me that we would figure it out day by day. It made me realize why I had not taken such drastic action before. I couldn't see how we would work it out, but we did.
They made peace and he returned the car keys to her the following day. Until the next time ...
