There's no doubt about it, we're all going to get it. Not only has this winter brought more snow and ice than we've seen in many years, but it brought temperatures cold enough to keep a bear in a cave long past the first day of spring.

In North Carolina, we're used to mild winters where our kids can play outside most days and burn off steam. This has not been that winter. As a result, we've all become more connected than ever to our phones, our iPads and our computers to pass the time inside as the wind howled outside and ice covered our cul de sacs.

But this past weekend brought a promise of spring - sunny skies and warmer temperatures. It is a long-awaited gift that made everyone giddy with the hope of beautiful weather that is sure to follow our unusually rough winter.

I say we harness this feeling and disconnect. Let's send our children outside with bikes, balls, skateboards and curiousity for everything that exists in nature outside a wireless connection. And more importantly, let's follow them outside. Let's not take for granted the beautiful days even though in North Carolina we seem to get more than our fair share compared to the rest of the country ...
