More than 200,000 turn out for return of Wings Over Wayne

Belinda Cain depends on a F-18 fighter jet.

She forgot her sunscreen on Sunday while attending the Wings Over Wayne Air Show at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

"We're having fun. They have a lot of stuff for kids to do," the Goldsboro resident said. "There are so many people here this time."

Cain was among an estimated 205,000 people who attended the free weekend event, which featured aerial acrobatics and ground exhibitions of military aircraft, a kids' zone, musical entertainment and more. About 175,000 visitors attended the 2011 show, military officials said.

One of the event's highlights was a performance by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, who fly in formation inches apart and zoom over the crowd.

The biannual event returned after 2013's sequestration cut it from the military budget.

Watching fighter jets fly overhead, and observing them in person on the ground, impressed both adults and children.

"I work on Fort Bragg on helicopters, but I've never seen anything like this," Joe Allen said. "I've been around the Air Force, but I've never seen this type of demonstration."

Luke Sasser, 8, is already looking into becoming an Air Force pilot.

"Yeah, I'll probably be dropping bombs and stuff," he said.
