After wet week, holiday weather looking good
After a wet week in the Triangle and central and eastern parts of the state, the Independence Day forecast is shaping up to be a good one for outdoor celebrations and fireworks.

A weather pattern that was expected to bring rain to the area was moving farther west Thursday morning, but WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said there's still a slight possibility of thunderstorms in the area but that the greatest chance of rain is west of the Triangle.
"We can't completely rule out a few thunderstorms. It's possible," she said. "That chance goes up the farther west you go, but if you're thinking about heading to the beaches today, it looks fine."
The threat of showers or storms in the area will dissipate by the evening, just in time for fireworks to light up the sky.
"By the time we get to the evening, most of it will die down," Gardner said of storm activity.
Temperatures were forecast to reach the low to mid-80s by lunchtime and highs reaching the upper 80s. By the time for fireworks Thursday night, temperatures will likely be in the upper 70s.
Holiday celebrations will be much more pleasant compared to the same time last year, when the high temperature reached 101 degrees.
Although temperatures aren't expected to be that intense, there is a warming trend over the next seven days. Highs will reach the low 90s by Wednesday.
Skies will be partly cloudy, and the threat of thunderstorms looms.
