After-school program head accused of driving while impaired

Posted 12:27 p.m. Saturday

— Police say the head of an after-school program in North Carolina was arrested after she was discovered driving a bus while intoxicated with two children on board.

Local news sources report the Waynesville Police Department says 46-year-old Angell Kirkpatrick Benson was charged with misdemeanor driving while impaired and failure to maintain lane control.

According to police, an officer stopped Benson near an intersection on Wednesday after authorities received several calls about the bus.

Police said tests showed Benson registered a 0.19 blood alcohol level and also performed poorly on several on-scene tests. She also refused to give a breath sample before being taken to the Haywood County Jail. It's not known if she has an attorney.

The police report said more charges are pending.
