AFP spends $1.4 million to re-run ad slamming Hagan

Americans for Prosperity is spending $1.4 million to air an ad in North Carolina that slams U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan for her support of the Affordable Care Act.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Americans for Prosperity is re-running an ad that claims "Obamacare doesn't work" and slams U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan for her support of the law.

Hagan, a Democrat, is running for re-election this year.

AFP, a conservative group, is part of a network of groups funded in part by the Koch brothers, a pair of oil industry magnates. Its North Carolina ties extend to Art Pope, who used to sit on the group's national board but now serves at Gov. Pat McCrory's budget director.

In a news release Tuesday, AFP said will spend $1.4 million to re-air the "It's about people" ad, in which an actress addresses the camera head-on for most of the 30-second spot. A WRAL News Fact Check of the ad found that it lacked important context.

AFP says its ads are not technically campaign ads, but political scientists and election observers say they almost certainly are aimed at impacting a race that could be pivotal in determining the partisan control of the U.S. Senate. The group says this latest ad buy adds to $5.1 million it has already spent in North Carolina since late last year.
