N.C. — An adult in western North Carolina is the first person in the state to die of complications from the flu during the 2015-2016 season, state health officials said Thursday.

Officials with the state Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately release the victim's gender, age or hometown.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family," Dr. Megan Davies, the state's acting health director, said in a statement. "We hope that by making people aware of this unfortunate case we will remind everyone that flu can be a serious disease and encourage people to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting vaccinated."

Officials recommend yearly flu vaccinations for anyone 6 months or older.

"It's not too early to get the flu vaccine. Getting your shot now will protect you through the entire season, so it's important not to wait." said Davies.

Health officials also advise residents to stay home if they are sick or until 24 hours after a fever has subsided, vigorously and frequently wash hands using soap and water, and cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue.

Visit the state’s website for more information, including where to obtain a flu shot.
