CLAYTON, N.C. — Clayton police on Friday added to the charges against a man who once taught at Johnston County's Archer Lodge Middle School.

Paul Clifton Canally, 29, of 148 Buchanan Lane, was arrested Wednesday on charges that he sexually abused a teenage boy numerous times over a 19-month span. On Friday, police added more charges of statutory rape and soliciting a child by computer.

The case came to light when a boy went to police in February and told them graphic details about the alleged abuse he endured. The investigation remains open, and police have asked others with knowledge about Canally to come forward. He was being held in the Johnston County Jail under more than $2 million bond.

Canally was a seventh-grade science teacher at Archer Lodge Middle School from August 2007 to July 2009, when he resigned for personal reasons, Johnston County Schools spokeswoman Terri Sessoms said.

Sessoms said there were no written complaints against Canally during his tenure, and the school district took no disciplinary actions against him.
