— An improper lane change caused a chain reaction Wednesday night that led to a crash and a traffic mess near Durham, according to authorities.

Three vehicles wrecked at about 8:30 p.m. on Interstate 40 westbound near Page Road.

All four lanes were closed for about 40 minutes while crews cleared the wreckage.

One person was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No other details were available.

I think I passed this last night. However, I'm not sure what caused the wreck...but there was a white van completely stopped in the 3rd lane on 40. I was thinking someone's going to slam into the back of it. It was facing forward and the rear lights were on so not sure why it was there. Really stupid to be stopped on a major interstate with no flashing lights. If this was after the wreck, he should have put on flashers and moved off the highway.

    Blues Man Z,

    You're correct!

Also, don't change more than one lane at a time. It's not safe and you have no idea how the lane two lanes away can change before you get into it. I see people every day cruising along at well over a safe speed on I-40, and instead of slowing down they move from the inside lane to the outside lane in one move without a signal.

Note to all North Carolinians. There is a lever on your steering wheel column known as a turn signal. Use it !
