Accident briefly shuts down westbound I-40 near Benson

— Authorities said a pickup truck trying to change lanes on Interstate 40 clipped a tractor-trailer Monday, causing an accident that briefly closed all westbound lanes in Johnston County near Benson.

The accident happened about 12:40 p.m. near mile marker 331, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the pickup, which was towing a camper, began merging from the right to the left lane. The driver apparently did not leave enough distance to change lanes, and the back of the camper caught the front of the tractor-trailer.

The impact caused the camper to fishtail, then both the camper and pickup truck overturned into the median, troopers said.

The pickup driver was described as an older man who suffered cuts. He was taken to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries.

Information on any charges in the accident was not immediately available.

Is this the same incident as the 'tractor trailer carrying a mobile home' that was reported in I-40 earlier today?

Well it was, but it sounded better than an air transport plane dropped the camper from 28000 feet!

"medium"? Has WRAL got 1st graders writing their web content?

    The word is "median".

"...into the medium"? The medium what? I-40 is pretty large, I'd say, as is that grassy area between the two sides.

Just another example of reporting anything, regardless of factual content, to get the scoop on another media outlet. "Accident blocks traffic" would have been sufficient to steer people away until they could get their facts straight.

Unfortunatley, we live in a 24/7 media blitz where pride in quality reporting has been replaced by the rush to get something in print or on air first, regardless of accuracy.
