Abducted Chatham boy located after six years

Edwin Sanchez Gonzalez was 2 when his father, Jorge Sanchez Aguilera, kidnapped him on Oct. 1, 2006, and fled to Mexico. Aguilera was convicted last month on three counts of first-degree kidnapping and one count each of first-degree burglary and second-degree kidnapping in the case.

Authorities say Aguilera and several masked men broke into the home of Edwin's mother, Florentina Coria, tied her up with duct-tape, took the boy and threatened to kill him if she called police.

Aguilera was arrested in Mexico in 2010 and later extradited to Chatham County in November, but authorities had never been able to find Edwin.

Chatham County Assistant District Attorney Kayley Taber said the boy was in U.S. custody in Brownsville, Texas, and that Coria was flying to Texas Friday afternoon to be reunited with him.

Authorities had expressed hope that Aguilera's conviction would lead to Edwin's return in return for leniency in sentencing. They said they believed the boy was being held in Mexico by Aguilera's relatives.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 10.
