AB Combs Elementary named nation's top magnet school
Raleigh's A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School was named the country's top magnet school on Friday during a Magnet Schools of American conference in Hartford, Conn.

It marks the second time A.B. Combs has received the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, which is given annually to the nation's top magnet school. A.B. Combs was also honored in 2006.
To receive a national merit award, Magnet Schools of America member schools must submit an application that is scored by a panel of educators. Schools are judged on their ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create community partnerships that enhance the school’s theme.
Nearly 300 public magnet schools applied for merit awards this year.
