To ease community tension, Durham officer does 'Nae Nae' with children

Officer Sawyer Crossan was on patrol in the Oakley Square Apartment Complex on Sunday when he spotted the group of kids.

"They started talking to me, asking about my police gear and started playing some music," Crossan said.

Before he knew it, a neighbor came outside and captured the officer doing the "Whip and Nae Nae."

"I was like 'Go ahead and get it. Do your little "Whip and Nae Nae."' It was so awesome," said neighbor Ann Spears.

At a time when in many communities there is tension with police, in the area of Oakley Square Apartments, Officer Crossan is welcome anytime.

"I was like, 'Wow. That is really amazing because you don't get that a lot nowadays,'" Spears said. "I was like, 'Yes. They always think the officer is a bad guy. This has to make a different opinion to everybody's thought.'"

And for many residents, it has.

"I think it's good that we can show that we are human beings and we are not robots," Crossan said.

Crossan said that gaining the trust of people is a rewarding aspect of his job. He said next time he hopes to play basketball or Frisbee.
