NCCapitol photographer Bill Herrero was setting up his camera in the House chamber this morning when he spotted an unusual item sitting next to the dais: a Viking helmet, complete with horns.

Herrero emailed me a photo: "Should I be worried?"

After asking around, we found out the helmet belongs to Tillis Chief of Staff Charles Thomas.  And, no, it wasn't meant to signal the day's legislative strategy. Thomas brought it in Wednesday for "Brims and Bows" day, the annual day when House lawmakers wear hats or bowties.

"It's the funniest hat I own," Thomas said.

Thomas was hoping to win the award for the day's best hat, but said he missed the judging due to Wednesday's hectic pace.
