A new view: Festival welcomes families to Dix park

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh taxpayers got a first look at the future Saturday at "Destination Dix," a free, summer festival on the site of the city's planned destination park.
The city committed $52 million to convert the former site of the state mental hospital into a premier park.

The site already has the views. The city skyline emerges from the trees in the hilltop vantage point of Dorothea Dix Park's Big Field.

From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., visitors to the park will enjoy live music, food and drink, a vendor village, inflatables for the kids, rides in a tethered hot air balloon and on a ferris wheel constructed especially for the occasion.

With Saturday's heat index expected to be near 100 degrees, organizers incorporated plenty of shaded areas and misting tents into the event. There is also a bubble pool for children to play in.

All activities are free, but cash will be needed for food and beverage purchases and to purchase items from the 100 vendors on-site.
