Wintry chill blasts Triangle

— The Triangle could see the coldest night in years this week after a double blast of arctic air rushed in from the north late Monday. The low point comes early Wednesday morning, when the temperature could dip to 20 degrees before daybreak. Current Temperatures, DMA Temperature Tracker

"The coldest of the air arrives around toward midnight," said Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel. "By morning temperatures will be about 25 degrees. With the wind chill, we could be in the upper teens."

Frigid air which moved into the U.S. from Canada, wrapped around the northernmost part of the country over the weekend, causing a dramatic drop in the mercury. Bismarck, N.D., was at 4 degrees with a wind chill of minus 14, while Minneapolis clocked in at 16 degrees with a wind chill that felt like minus 2.

Despite widespread sun, Tuesday's temperatures won't get much beyond the freezing mark. Highs could push toward 40 degrees, but it will feel like teens and 20s at times as winds occasionally gust up to 20 or 25 mph, Fishel said.

The mercury truly bottoms out, possibly dipping into the teens, Wednesday morning before beginning a gradual climb back to more seasonal norms by the end of the work week.

"Traveled to the Twin Cities, Elk River, Hudson WI. It's not because of the temps that I wouldn't live there, really........

I'm only there for the work. The pizza here is terrible, although I did find one good neighborhood spot . . . When I can really finally retire (when is that?) I'll be back full-time to my eastern NC home.

Try Minneapolis, it's -5 for a high here today. Lucky you don't live up here, whiners.

It's going to be cold at night, so please take care of your outside pets if ya have em. Extra hay, bedding sure help em a lot.

For the first time, we agree on something. Be careful with your animals, nothing worse than ignoring them on nights like this.

You transplants annoy me! I am an NC native and still hate the mild winters and hot summers. I am dreaming of a white Christmas in January or February; either will be fine with me. And as far as global warming is concerned, there is no such thing!

gregg45 - " i hope all tuned into the coronation OF KING BARACK THE FIRST"

Inaugurations have been going on every four years since the 19th century. Reagan's had more pomp and pageantry but no one called it a coronation. And, why aren't the Repugnantican presidents called king? Hypocrite.

Sorry Mr. Fish, not a flake coming with it.

It's NOT GLOBAL WARMING -- IT'S CLIMATE CHANGE!!!

Quit using old phrases and realize that we're adding gases to the atmosphere that are like adding Gasoline to a fire!

The planet already has a system that includes CO2 but we are adding enormous amounts that are causing the weather changing events we are experiencing daily...

We might get 2 inches of snow starting Friday night.

You implants just kill me. LOL! Us true NC natives are used to the mild winters and hot summers. If the temp falls below 50, I freeze my butt off. Give me 110 degrees in the shade anyday.
