Wake snow make up days spare spring break

Posted February 18, 2014

Wake County Public School System

— Wake County school officials were able to set three snow make up days without sacrificing spring break.

By law, schools are required to schedule two and a half extra days of instruction.

School officials will use those days, and turn an early release day on March 7 into a full day.

“It has been an unusual winter with snowfall, so we looked at our options and I am really glad we were able to preserve spring break and move to extend that early release day,” said Christine Kushner, school board chairwoman.

The make up snow days from January’s winter storm are scheduled and will not change.

Thanks to the legislators for making the changes to the law in 2012 so that all districts can choose the option of completing 1,025 hours instead of 185 days. Much more flexibility. Bravo for Wake Co. for using that option to help with snow days!

This is just one of the reasons why YR school attendance should NOT be mandated. If parents choose to go that route, then they have opted for the whole package, half-day Sat. make-up days and all.

Yeah these comments are priceless. Imagine the terror 3Hartley's child will endure attending an extra half day of receiving an education! All these parents are worried about time off from school when they should be concerned that they are missing out on their education. Not to mention that these Saturday school days are nothing more than "video days" in most classrooms. 30%+ of the students don't attend anyhow.

As if anyone nowadays other than us oldies remember what Memorial Day is really for.

Shamefully for most young people nowadays, it's just another day to party.

This I'm glad to hear because so many really NEED that break.

But...the make up days must happen and parents need to quit whining about the Saturday classes.

No one ever really gets a free ride in life, and that's a good lesson for your children to be learning.

One minute we are concerned over our kids education but of course a vacation or something means more to us. SMH....our school leaders are terrible. We should make up the days minute for minute so our kids get an education and can compete for jobs.

The last thing that we want to consider is the education of the students. We certainly do not want to interfere with spring break! This thinking is why we are so far behind in education on a worldwide scale.

So when does track 3 get their 3 free days off of school? Oh wait, they don't. They actually have to go an extra 1/2 day for some reason.

I wish my district could wave our delayed openings and come up with a day like Wake County waved their early release. My district took away the Memorial Holiday in May...so our entire district will have a full day of school on Memorial day. Personally, I would rather come in a day over spring break or a Saturday. Taking Memorial day just seems like a slap in the face to our military families.

Years ago our teachers seemed to handle us pretty good with just 2 days at Easter and not all of these breaks. As for the kids calming down, maybe so, but when they come back they will be excited because the end of school is in sight. I guess it's just what you get conditioned for and things are different now, but not necessarily better. FWIW, my mother was a teacher and my wife and daughter are teachers now.

I always enjoyed MTV's coverage of spring break.
