Craving sweets but gluten free? Try these places

— With more people going gluten free each day (including some folks at WRAL), we wanted to take a look at some of the spots offering gluten-free desserts! 

Folks who are gluten free need to stay away from gluten, which is a grain found in wheat, barley and rye. This makes it difficult to enjoy stuff like cakes, pies, cookies and bread (basically all my food groups) unless they are specifically labeled "gluten free." 

But what if you have a craving for something sweet from a bakery? I found a few spots in the Triangle offering a good array of gluten free bakery items. 

The idea for this story actually came after we found out about Sugar Buzz Bakery and Cafe's Gluten Free Fridays! This Cary cafe normally has about four gluten-free items on hand each day, but they amp it up on Fridays to include a large array of gluten-free fare including cupcakes, cakes, mousse cups, quiche and more! We really loved the raspberry cheesecake, double chocolate brownie and salted caramel cupcake - all gluten-free! They are even going to be selling their gluten-free flour mix, so you can bake some items at home. Sugar Buzz Bakery & Cafe

Sugarland, which has locations in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, offers gluten-free cupcakes daily. This week's options included Mimosa, Nana's Caramel and Strawberry Vanilla. YUM! 

Rise in Durham has amazing doughnuts, but did you know that you can also get gluten-free doughnuts there? Yep! Just check out their menu daily for the gluten-free option! 

Head to Mama Dip's in Chapel Hill to buy some of Tonya's Cookies - gluten-free and delicious! 

You also can't go wrong checking out any Whole Foods. They even sell gluten free flour.

Many bakeries are starting to offer more gluten free options. Just check out your favorite one and ask about it.
